Crocs part of Kates big test

By STEVE SPINKS

CROCODILES and surging whitewater will test Old Bonalbo's Kate Lawrence to the limit today when she competes in the 2007 World Kayak Slalom Championships in Brazil.

Lawrence, pictured above, the Australian No.2, will line up at the challenging Foz do Iguacu course in the women's K1 event.

Writing on her website this week, Lawrence said the course would test all competitors.

"It's fairly narrow, with plenty of good features and some surgey eddies to make things tricky 2sometimes," 1she wrote.

"Apparently a crocodile was seen in the warm-up area this afternoon after our session! (just a little one ...)."

As long as it is only a small one! This will be the 22-year-old's third world championships. Last year she finished 13th; she achieved her best result of 11th in the 2005 competition.

Today the top 40 ranked paddlers from the heats will progress to the semi-finals on Sunday.

From there, the list will be whittled down to 10 to compete in the final.
