Cricket camp facet of Bundjalung Festival

More than 40 children attended the first Far North Coast Aboriginal cricket camp as part of the Bundjalung Cricket Festival at Ballina at the weekend.

Young players were put through the basics of the game by NSW development officer Brett Rankin, Ballina Bears first grade captain Andrew Gordon and former Queensland Sheffield Shield spinner John McMahon.

A Far North Coast Aboriginal Under-12s team was selected at the conclusion of the coaching clinic.

This team will take on the Ballina District Under-12s in a representative match on Australian Day next January.

An Under-17s Aboriginal side will also be selected in the next few weeks and they will also play on Australia Day.

Three youngsters were singled out for recognition with Leroy Duroux named the most encouraging junior, Jeya Duroux the encouraging junior girl and Jirra Breckenridge the encouraging junior boy.

Breckenridge, 13, capped off a fine weekend by being selected in the Open FNC Aboriginal XI which will take on a lower North Coast side in the following weeks.
