Crashes shut down highway

THE Pacific Highway was shut down south of Grafton yesterday as police dealt with an accident in which one person was killed. The crash occurred at Halfway Creek between Grafton and Coffs Habour. It is believed one of the drivers involved in the crash had been spotted by police driving erratically on the outskirts of Grafton and police had given chase to the vehicle. The car collided with a truck and a four-wheel-drive, causing the truck to run down an embankment. It is believed the driver of the four-wheel-drive was killed. Meanwhile, traffic on the highway north of Ballina was diverted after a crash at the Ross Lane blackspot. A woman's car was struck by a south-bound utility as she turned right out of Ross Lane about 3.30pm. She was taken to Ballina Hospital suffering minor injuries.
