Coming of age on baseball diamonds of Europe
AS local baseball moves into the winter cold, Lismore Workers Major League player Martin Tucker will make the journey to a European summer this month to join the Australian Provincial team in Germany.
Tucker, a student at Southern Cross University, earned his position last year with a stunning performance in the Australian Provincial Championships at Mt Gambier, playing for Queensland Provincial.
His performance out of position at shortstop, in addition to an exceptional tournament with the bat, set him up for selection and the opportunity of a lifetime.
"I'm really excited by this opportunity," he said.
"I will be having my 21st birthday in Paris during the tournament there.
"We get some days off between tournaments, so I will have the opportunity to see a few of the sights while I'm there."
The Australian Provincial team will play tournaments in Paris and in Antwerp, Belgium.
They are past champions so they will be out to play competitive baseball, something that will not escape the watchful eyes of various scouts who will be there.
Tucker is raising money to help offset the expense of the trip.
"I have had some generous support already from Optus World, Greg Hickey at Budget Eyewear and the Lismore Workers Club," he said.
"I am very grateful for their support."
Tucker will host a social bowls day at the East Lismore Bowling Club from 10am tomorrow.
Teams from all sports are welcome. A barbecue lunch will be provided for participants with a small donation to assist with costs.
