Coffs Cup target for big horse

By GREG WHITE

HE'S a cult figure because of his size and already has one Coffs Harbour Gold Cup victory to his name.

Gentle giant Concitare today will attempt the race for the fourth year in a row and two years after he caused one of the all-time boilovers.

"He's a beautiful big horse and is a great drawcard for local racing," trainer and part-owner Bruce Swan said.

"There's one little group of fans who follow him around to wherever he races and I bet they'll be here today when he tries to make history.

"It takes something special to back up year after year, especially in the same feature race."

After a huge run in the Grafton Cup behind Ashraf, Swan took the horse to Ballina last start to freshen him up for the engagement today.

To find a suitable rider for the gelding, the trainer went back through a dozen or so of his previous runs before settling on new premier rider Joshua Jones.

"Joshua rode him into third placing at the Gold Coast some time back and I thought he handled him really well," Swan said.

"The track was rain-affected that day and if we get any moisture between now and post time the experience will be invaluable."

Concitare carried 53kg to victory in 2005 and has an extra 1.5kg today.

"The three at the top of the weights getting in light probably compressed the scale," Swan said.
