Casino hit by heavy hailstorm

By NERIDA BLOK

NEVER before had Pauline Small seen a hailstorm like this on the Northern Rivers.

The South Casino resident, who lives in West Street, said she awoke at midnight on Tuesday to what she thought sounded like super-heavy rain falling for five minutes.

But it wasn't until next morning Ms Small could see it was more than heavy rain that had fallen.

"At 8am I looked out the laundry window and saw a huge mass of ice," she said.

"It appears to have come down the downpipe.

"It had welded together into a big clump."

Ms Small said it was amazing that at 2pm yesterday ? 14 hours later ? the clump of ice had still not melted.

She was also astounded no damage had been caused.

Ashleigh Wilson, from the Coffs Harbour Bureau of Meteorology, said thunderstorms coming from the south-west did pass through the region on Tuesday night.

"And definitely you get hail out of a thunderstorm cell," she said. "It's very common."
