Calls for G?Bah police station

By SAMANTHA TURNBULL

ESCALATING crime in Goonellabah has sparked renewed calls from Lismore Cr Frank Swientek for a 24-hour police station to be built in the suburb.

The councillor, dubbed the 'unofficial mayor of Goonellabah', said the community was more than five times the size of some Northern Rivers' villages that do have their own police stations.

"If people know the response time from police is going to be longer, they're going to take ad- vantage of that," he said.

"Why do we need all of our police jammed into Lismore station? Police who deal with Goonellabah should be stationed here."

Richmond Local Area commander Supt Bruce Lyons said he was unaware of Cr Swientek's campaign.

"I look forward to meeting Cr Swientek. There does need to be a sustained increased police presence in the area, which can be achieved by an increase in deployment of police to Goonellabah," he said.
