Byron duo oust stars on way to national semi-finals

UP-AND-COMING Byron Bay area surfers Garret Parkes and Ellis Ericson, who is also a finalist in The Northern Star-Southern Cross Ten Junior Sports Star of the Year, are through to the semi-finals of the Quiksilver Australian Grommet Titles in Tasmania.

Parkes (Under-16) and Ericson (Under-18) were partly responsible for upsets at the prestigious contest, surfed in 1.5m-2m offshore waves at remote Roaring Beach, two hours south of Hobart.

Among those to fall by the wayside were Under-18 top seed Heath Joske, from Nambucca Heads, Lincoln Taylor (Stradbroke Island) and Dave Delroy-Carr (Margaret River).

Former Quiksilver Australian Grommets champion (2003) Lincoln Taylor was also eliminated in a disappointing fourth place behind WA's Tom Clarke (Mandurah), Ericson (Suffolk Park) and WA's Jake Malloy (Geraldton), respectively.
