Brian bowls over Ballina

By STEVE SPINKS MUSGRAVE HILL bowler Brian Baldwin has developed a love affair with the Ballina Bowling Club.

In January he won the prestigious Summerland Singles and yesterday he completed a tough double by taking out the $6000 Wintersun Singles.

Baldwin, pictured above, defeated NSW Institute of Sport scholarship holder and Merrylands bowler Jesse McKenzie 31-29 in a thrilling three-and-a-half-hour final.

"I dropped behind a bit early by nine or 10 shots but then came back," a thrilled Baldwin told The Northern Star.

"Jesse actually didn't realise the final was the first to 31 so when I got three to go to 25 he came up to shake hands but I told him it wasn't over yet."

Baldwin then inched in front to lead 29-28 then 30-29 before snaring the final end with a clutch draw.

Baldwin, who represented New Zealand at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, is the secretary-manager of the Musgrave Hill club on the Gold Coast.

He won the Queensland State title earlier this year.

"They're a great club and they allow me to play top bowls," Baldwin said.

McKenzie, the NSW Under-25 champion, led the charge of the younger brigade; three out of the four semi-finalists were under 25.

"I don't like losing to the young ones," Baldwin chuckled.

"As soon as you do they find beating you a lot easier from then on."

Baldwin's big-match experience helped him through a draw that consisted of a former world champion Steve Glasson and a myriad of Australian team members.

Best of the local challenges came from Lennox Head's Neil Burgess.

Burgess made it through his sectionals into the quarter-finals but then ran into Baldwin, who defeated him 25-14.

Ballina's Viv Ross finished runner-up in his section.
