Brazilian knockout blow for Wills & Co

Local knowledge, in the form of Brazilian wildcard Flavio Costa, wiped out Byron Bay surfer Danny Wills, pictured, yesterday during the second round of the Nova Schin Brazil, the 10th of 12 events on the 2005 World Championship Tour (WCT).

Costa was in a league of his own, posting the highest heat score of the event to date (17.27 out of a possible 20 points) leaving Wills trailing behind with a mere 9.30 (out of 20) overall heat score.

Wills, who is sitting at No 16 in world ratings, finished equal 33rd and pocketed $US3600.

There were plenty of upsets in the small surf, mostly courtesy of local unknowns.

Last year's runner-up Tom Whitaker, fellow Australians Trent Munro, the world No.5, as well as Hawaiian world No.11 Bruce Irons all had to settle for equal 33rd place as they were bundled out.

Queenslander Mick Fanning and American Damien Hobgood both enjoyed better results after defeating local opponents to progress into round three where the intense two-man duel between Andy Irons and Kelly Slater for this year's world title race resumes.
