Blazes keep fireys busy

THE RURAL Fire service (RFS) has had a busy weekend dealing with car, scrub and grass fires and motor vehicle accidents across the Northern Rivers.

On Saturday night a car was set alight in the Salty Lagoon carpark, on the Broadwater to Evans Head Road, about five kilometres north of Evans Head.

RFS Supt Boyd Townsend said the car was beyond saving by the time the RFS and the Broadwater Brigade arrived.

"The flames were so intense they even melted the engine and the alloy tyre rims," he said.

Supt Townsend said the RFS had also attended grass and scrub fires at Ellangowan, Grevillia, Alphadale and Bentley.

He wants the public to be aware that the RFS intends to fine people who fail to control fires or who do not inform the relevant landowner.

The RFS also attended an accident on the Pacific Highway at Wardell on Saturday afternoon.

Two people were taken to Lismore Base Hospital with minor injuries.
