Blackout leads to ?handful? of claims

COUNTRY Energy has received several claims for damages from local businesses following last week's blackout, which left over 10,000 homes and businesses in Ballina, Lennox Head, Tintenbar, Wardell and Knockrow without power. Country Energy regional general manager for the Far North Coast Col Ussher said minor damage to business equipment caused by the blackout had resulted in a 'handful' of claims. He wasn't able to give an exact figure. However, several Ballina businesses are planning to lodge claims with Country Energy in the following weeks. One business owner said he was waiting for the claim forms to arrive in the mail, while other businesses said they were investigating the appropriate procedures for making a damages claim with the electricity provider. Mr Ussher said Country Energy was continuing to investigate the cause of the extensive blackout. "We are working around the clock to reach a conclusion on what happened and to prevent it happening again," he said.
