Bay duo wipeout in Hawaii

BYRON Shire's two globe-trotting women surfers ? Laurina McGrath and Pauline Menczer ? bowed out of the Billabong Pro Maui in Hawaii at the weekend.

The losses mean much more for the 34-year-old Menczer, who has now missed the cut for the World Championship Tour for 2005.

For Menczer, a critical fall in the barrel against Gold Coaster Chelsea Georgeson signalled the end of her 18-year stint in the WCT.

"I blew it on a really nice barrel," said the 1993 world champ Menczer.

"That's the way the cookie crumbled. I'm happy though, and will be doing the WQS next year."

The third round also produced a shock, with Australian wildcard entrant Rebecca Woods eliminating 2004 world champion Sofia Mulano-vich.
