Ballina to celebrate its river
By DAWN COHEN
BALLINA Rivafest co-ordinator Kerry Greedy believes in planning, but her own life was changed by an accident.
She was driving through Ballina with her boyfriend 25 years ago wondering whether to marry him, when her rusty old Alfa Romeo broke down.
After a two-week forced stay, the town's beauty worked its magic.
The couple chose each other for their future, with Ballina as its setting.
Ms Greedy is the town's first paid co-ordinator of its September celebration of the Richmond River.
"It's great to organise an event in my home town," she said.
Formerly known as Ballina Alive, Rivafest's 2005 theme is 'Stories of the River.'
"I love festivals. I go to lots of them in my spare time, and you learn what works and what doesn't," said Ms Greedy.
"Fine-tuned planning is the secret to success. The simplest thing can take the longest time to plan, but you can't leave anything to chance.
"Rivafest won't just be something to look at, but rather a community celebration everyone can be part of."
The festival is on Septem- ber 17-18.
