Ballina public holiday wont be needed

BALLINA'S half-day public holiday next Thursday has been cancelled.

NSW Industrial Relations Minister John Della Bosca said yesterday he had accepted the recommendation of Ballina Shire Council and cancelled the holiday in the wake of the postponement of the Ballina Cup race meeting.

"I understand council and the Ballina Jockey club will reschedule the cup to a date yet to be determined," the Minister said.

Mr Della Bosca said councils were asked to consult with their communities as to whether the public holiday should proceed, even though the reason for it was cancelled.

A decision on whether or not the Lismore Cup will go ahead on September 28 is expected to be made on Monday.
