Ballina Cup target if Sircolo wins

JOHN Shelton has won one Casino RSM Club Casino Cup (1400m), back in 2003 with Miss Ceeanne, and looks set to add another tomorrow with top weight Sircolo. If he wins well tomorrow, Shelton will consider pressing on with the grey towards the $40,000 Carlton Ballina Cup (1600m) on September 13. "I have never tried him beyond 1400 metres but the Ballina Cup is certainly on the radar if he wins tomorrow," Shelton said. Sircolo's full brother, High Octane, won up to 2000m. Sircolo won over 1400m at Eagle Farm in February then went for a spell. He resumed with a win over 1000m at Grafton in June then was beaten only 3.7 lengths when 10th to The Jackal in the Ramornie Handicap and 4.1 lengths when 13th over 1350m at Doomben on July 28. "He drew barrier 20 in the Ramornie and had to circle every other runner so it was a good effort," Shelton said. "And he had no luck at Doomben." Shelton's apprentice, Ben Looker, will ride Sircolo tomorrow and while Shelton believes the horse has been weighted up to his best with 60kg, Looker's claim will help.
