Ballina council appoints new GM

By DAWN COHEN

BALLINA'S new general manager has been chosen? but the winner of the $170,000 negotiable contract will remain a secret until next week.

At an extraordinary general meeting yesterday morning, Ballina Shire councillors interviewed three candidates from a pool of seven shortlisted by a council selection committee.

After four hours, they emerged with a resolution authorising Local Government Association consultants, Employment Solutions, to conduct background checks and negotiate a contract with the recommended candidate.

Ballina mayor Phil Silver congratulated councillors for their exemplary behaviour throughout the procedure.

The contract must be finalised before the name can be revealed, acting general manager Gary Faulks said. "In a few days we will tell you everything," he said.

Mr Faulks, general manager until 2000, was temporarily brought out of retirement to fill the gap after Ballina Shire Council negotiated an early termination of contract with previous general manager Stuart McPherson in January.

"I will go back to beef farming," Mr Faulks said.
