Ballina chamber's car parking plege

By MARY MANN

A ROOM of enthusiastic business people applauded yesterday morning as a new board of management was elected for the Ballina Chamber of Commerce.

Votes were taken from members at the chamber's annual meeting, which was held over breakfast at the Ballina RSL Club.

Kim Thomas from The Northern Star, who has been on the board for the past two years, was re-elected, along with Peter Carmont from the Professionals Ballina and Debbie Carter from Wallace and Co.

Following the AGM, Ms Thomas was elected as deputy chair at a board meeting.

Board members continuing in office are Glenn Costello from Tursa Employment and Training as chair, Bryan Marriott from Marriott Foreman Financial Planning as secretary/treasurer, Clarissa Huegill from Huegill and Associates Lawyers, and Rob McArthur from Ballina Insurance Brokers.

Mr Costello said one of the projects the chamber was planning to tackle in the next 12 months was to lobby Ballina Shire Council for more parking in the CBD, as parking for staff of local businesses was not adequate.

He said highlights for the year ahead in Ballina would include the opening of the new Ramada Hotel, planned for August, and The Northern Star Ballina Shire Business Excellence Awards, which attracted a record crowd of 400 people last year.

Nominations for the awards will be called for in mid-May, and the award recipients will be announced in August
