B-Double overturns on highway upgrade

By WILL JACKSON staredit@northernstar.com.au

A WOMAN is recovering in the Tweed Heads Hospital with suspected neck injuries after her car collided with a B-Double on the Pacific High- way, north of Billinudgel. The accident occurred about 10.30pm on Friday near

the north Ocean Shores turn- off when the woman's north- bound Mitsubishi Verada clipped the southbound truck. The B-Double rolled down an embankment in the middle of the Abigroup's highway up- grade construction site. The truck driver received minor injuries. His truck contained about

700kg of pesticides and car cleaning products, which were cleared by the Fire Brigade's Hazmat unit. Abigroup Occupational Health and Safety officer Mi- chael Polito said it was lucky the area had been cleared of trees or the driver could have more likely been killed. Police said investigations were continuing into the ex- act cause of the accident. The Abigroup began work on the Brunswick to Yelgun Pacific Highway upgrade in July. The 8.6km stretch, which will link up with the southern end of the Yelgun to Chinderah upgrade, is expec- ted to be complete by early 2007.
