Attack disgusts Nimbin leaders
By RENEE REDMOND
THREE men have been arrested in Nimbin following a police crackdown on street crime.
Police have denied the arrests were in response to the fracas in Rainbow Lane, Nimbin, on Tuesday.
However Acting Superintendent Tony Crandell said a 41-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for hindering police during Tuesday's attempted arrest, where a detec- tive was spat on.
Insp Crandell said Nimbin community leaders had expressed their disgust about the assault of a detective on Tuesday.
"We want to develop strategies to effectively police the violence," he said.
Insp Crandell said he had arranged a meeting between the community leaders and senior police on Wednesday.
Nimbin's Michael Balderstone agreed the police and community needed to get to- gether to discuss violence in the community.
"We want a safe and friendly street. A lot of people are upset about the incidents this week. I believe there was inappropriate behaviour from both sides," he said.
Police also charged a 20year-old Lismore man and a 26-year-old Nimbin man, with possession of cannabis on Thursday.
The three men will appear in Lismore Local Court on July 25.
