All Above the rest

LennoxHead's All Above Board yesterday became the last surf shop to qualify for a place in the grand final of the Quiksilver Core Store Surf Challenge by convincingly winning the Queensland round of the inaugural event held in one-metre waves at Main Beach, Surfers Paradise.

All Above Board's team of Dan Thomson, Rusty Baker, Sunny Russell, Carly Smith and Noel Graham served notice as serious contenders by defeating five other core store teams in the tag-team style surf-off, including Brothers Neilsen, whose talent-packed squad pushed their southern rivals to the final siren.

All Above Board will now join seven other winning teams from around Australia and New Zealand in the big one, the Quiksilver Core Store Surf Challenge Grand Final which will be staged as a curtain-raiser to the Quiksilver Pro, the first event on the ASP World Championship Tour, beginning on March 1 at Snapper Rocks.

Sunny Russell, from All Above Board, scored the three highest combined wave scores in the final including an 8.33, 7.60 and 6.83, an effort bolstered by strong performances from each of his team mates including Smith, who locked in the day's highest individual wave score of the women.

All Above Board (58.85pts) finished ahead of Brothers Neilsen (43.44), Vidlers (31.00) and Quiksilver Boardriders Club (24.210.
