Air fare raised for Tobias

By ZOE SATHERLEY

LISMORE Cr Jenny Dowell and travel agent, Fay Hopf, are thrilled with the response of the Northern Rivers community to their appeal for Tobias Suckfuell.

Tobias is the boyfriend of German backpacker Simone Strobel, who was possibly murdered in Lismore CBD about two weeks ago.

Cr Dowell heard last week that Tobias was having difficulty in raising the funds to return back to Germany with Simone's body.

Tobias had gone in to Harvey World Travel in Lismore to book his flight and was heard to comment that he didn't know how he would pay for it, and that he could live for a year on the cost of a ticket.

Cr Dowell and Ms Hopf decided to launch a public appeal for Tobias to help him get home.

By midday on Saturday donations had totalled $2,500 ? enough to cover Tobias' airfare.

Many people said they also wanted to contribute to Simone's funeral costs and any expenses related to the return of her body to her home town of Riedel, near Wuerzburg in Germany.

Ms Hopf said many children came in to donate one dollar from their pocket money. The largest donation was $150.

One single mother gave the last five dollars in her purse and said she would be back to donate some more when she received her pension payment on Tuesday.

Many people were in tears when they came in to donate money, Ms Hopf said.

n Donations to the appeal for Tobias and Simone's family can be dropped off at Harvey World Travel, 56 Magellan Street.
