LENNOX Head's Adam Melling, pictured, cruised through to the third round of the Billabong World Pro Junior Championships at North Narrabeen in Sydney yesterday.
The powerful natural- footer was forced into a surf-off in the second round in clean 1m waves after he narrowly went down in the first heat to a Japanese surfer, Nakano Masato.
However, Melling put that disappointment aside to dominate highly-rated Hawaiian Hank Gaskell.
Melling posted the second day's highest heat score ? 16 points out of 20.
That included an excellent 8.17 and a 7.83, which left his Hawaiian opponent reeling.
Sixty of the world's best 20-years-and-under surfers are competing for $60,000 prizemoney and an Association of Surfing Professionals World Pro Junior title.
Melling will continue his assault on the event today, however lurking menacingly in the draw is the defending champion, Adriano de Souza.
Another Lennox Head local, James Wood, was eliminated in the Von Zipper Trials as he tried to qualify for the Pro Junior.
