Accident victim dies

GOONELLABAH woman Vanessa Thurgate has died.

The 34-year-old woman had been on life support in the Tweed Hospital since Monday, February 9, after being run over by her own car in the driveway of her house.

Her friend, Maryanne Jordan, yesterday confirmed Vanessa died on Friday. She said no date had yet been set for her funeral.

The accident happened towards the end of a late-night barbecue, just after midnight, when Vanessa apparently had tried to roll her car back into the garage.

The car had a flat battery at the time of the accident.

It is believed the car may have started rolling backwards on the steep driveway and Vanessa tried to stop it by herself, but lost her footing.

She was caught underneath the car and dragged down the driveway and across the road.

The car stopped on the gutter in front of a neighbour's house.

She was rushed to Lismore Base Hospital with massive internal injuries.

She was later transferred to Tweed Hospital because of a shortage of intensive care beds at Lismore.
