Academy spot for Kyogle league player

By MATTHEW DONOVAN KYOGLE boy Dan Matthews, a brother of Australian Schoolboys team member Will Matthews, has been selected to fill a new Under-16 place at the Northern Rivers Country Rugby League (CRL) Academy.

Matthews is among three to receive the news, with Daniel Rhodes of South Grafton and Colin Higginbotham of Cudgen also being given the opportunity.

CRL Northern Rivers Academy co-ordinator Graham Boland said the boys were picked based on their potential to gain most benefit from the program and their interest in the game.

He said it was an opportunity for them to gain elite training in the off-season and he hoped the program would provide players who could enhance the local competition.

"The aim is to send them back to their clubs better players," he said.

According to Boland, the CRL program has the potential to create players of the highest level.

He's also trying to get some high- profile players from the NRL to come and talk to the boys.

"We've had Anthony Laffranchi come and have a chat," he said.

The Australian Institute of Sport is said to be keeping a close eye on the program.

They will go into full camp this weekend to ease them into the program just before Christmas.
