21st turns into brawl

Three people were hospitalised yesterday morning after a 21st birthday party erupted into a brawl at the Lismore Showgrounds.

Two men and a woman were taken to Lismore Base Hospital with head injuries sustained from several fights outside the members' stand.

A police spokesman said more than 100 people attended the party that turned violent around 4am.

Five police cars and two ambulances attended the scene.

No charges have been laid and police investigations are continuing.

The party host, a Lismore man, had no comment. Guests still at the scene at 9am said it was an open invitation party.

Northern Star reporters were verbally abused and threatened at the scene.

One man told a journalist he would bust their knee caps and later crashed a bicycle into the Northern Star car, claiming he had been hit by the car.

The car was parked at the time and had been for 10 minutes before the incident. He also shaped up at a photographer with his fists.

North Coast National Show Society president, John Gibson, said it was a private party and its hosts were responsible for security and the safety of guests.

Those hospitalised ? a 24year-old man, a 24-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man ? were discharged yesterday.
