Another violent sex attack

A WOODBURN man has been accused of attempting to rape a woman in a frightening knife attack inside her East Lismore home just before New Year’s Eve.

The woman, 22, fought off her armed intruder.

Daniel Blake, 26, appeared before the Lismore Bail Court yesterday charged with inflicting bodily harm on the woman with intent to have sexual intercourse; break and enter with intent to commit a serious offence; and reckless wounding.

Appearing in the dock handcuffed and clad in a pale green T-shirt, Blake was refused bail by the court registrar after prosecutor Detective Inspector Greg Moore opposed bail on the grounds the alleged offences were very serious, with Blake having limited ties to the area and being a flight risk.

Insp Moore said the police case against Blake was strong, with a number of forensic exhibits still to be tested.

In police allegations put before the bail hearing, Blake is accused of entering the woman’s Granger Avenue home at 10.40pm on December 30.

The woman told police a partially-clothed intruder confronted her inside a bedroom then jumped on her. During a struggle the man punched her in the face and she received cuts to her hands from a knife the attacker wielded. When the man ran off she was able to call police.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.

During a search near her home, police found a condom wrapper that will be subject to forensic examination. Officers also canvassed neighbours and received information about a car seen in the street.

Early on December 31, Blake was interviewed at his Woodburn home and charged on Thursday night.

Blake pleaded with the registrar to be released on bail because he had a job where he worked 10 hours a day.

“I was just hoping to get bail so I can pay for a proper law- yer and organise my defence. That’s all I’ve got to say,” Blake said.

With bail refused, the registrar adjourned the matter to the Lismore Local Court on Monday.

Meanwhile, police are still investigating two other incidents on December 30: a home invasion and rape of a Casino woman; and a Lismore incident where a woman found a naked man masturbating inside her home.
