Anna Bligh appointed to Medibank Private board

TWO former heavyweight politicians will be up for an extra pay packet next year, after the Gillard Government made two new appointments to government-owned boards on Tuesday.

Former Queensland premier Anna Bligh will get nearly $80,000 after Finance Minister Penny Wong appointed her to the board of Medibank Private.

Ms Bligh will replace Philip Twynam on the board for three years, with an annual package of at least $78,329 for her role as a non-executive director of the company.

Meanwhile, former foreign minister Alexander Downer was appointed to the board of the defence-affiliated Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

According to the ASPI annual report for 2011-12, Mr Downer's role on the board could attract an annual package of "between $0 and $150,000", but no further detail was reported.

Dr Cherrell Hirst was also re-appointed to the Medibank Private board for her second, three-year term.
