Amish community shares way of life at Splendour in the Grass

FAST paced festival goers were offered a taste of the simple life at this year's Splendour in the Grass as the Amish community returned for its third year.

Anabaptister is the name of the community which was envisioned by Western Australia based artist Bennett Miller who worked with local artists to create a space where modern-day festival goers are able to mingle and interact with a performative community of Amish men and women whether it be through a game of bocce on the lawn or simply by relaxing on a hay bale in the shade.

Project manager Amy Miller, who works closely with Bennet on the installation, said the space highlighted a contrast between different ways of life.

"It basically came out of a three year project that Lismore Regional Gallery did called Splendid," Ms Miller said. "There is quite a contrast between the ways we (Amish) behave, we're quite slow and the punters are quite fast."

The project has grown over the three years from a closed site to now allowing interaction between festival goers and the Amish community.

"There is a yard and a barn. We've got bands playing every day, we also had a really beautiful Maypole dance yesterday and there is a lot of other things going on."
