Fitness challenge ramps up as 300 assemble for fun run

A GROUP of women participating in a 12-week fitness challenge were among almost 300 people who took to the start line at the Ballina Lions Fun Run Walk yesterday.

The women are involved in Fit Complete, and have been focusing on improving their exercise and diet.

Karen O'Reilly said it had been a struggle at times.

"But it's been good because we're doing a lot of group training, which makes it easier," she said.

"We've got three weeks left of the challenge, so we thought that we'd all do the fun run together for something different."

The Ballina Lions Fun Run Walk started at Missingham Park in Ballina yesterday morning, with many people breathing a sigh of relief that the sun was shining.

Categories included the 5km and 10km runs, junior sections, over-50s and the 5km walk.

The event is now in its eighth year and the route takes participants along some of Ballina's picturesque coastline, including a stroll along North Wall.

Joyce Emmett from the Ballina Lions Club said they had almost 300 competitors overall.

"We were so lucky that the rain held off," she said.

"The money raised will go towards Lions childhood cancer research, and also a percentage will go to local charities."
