Trio win back-to-back titles

IT WAS a double celebration for Alstonville lawn bowlers Doreen Farmer, Joy Lowein and Greta Orchard at their home bowling club on Friday afternoon.

The trio have now won back-to-back district titles and will advance to zone level in the state-wide competition.

In a big afternoon for the club they defeated another Alstonville team that included Maureen Peart and Glenda and Nola Moore 29-17 in the final.

"It was great to have two Alstonville teams in the final," Lowein said.

"It's a wonderful achievement and we're all good friends."

The final was originally set down for Lismore but was moved to Alstonville when both teams made it through.

It was the first time Nola Moore had played competition at district level.

"We've all had success and it was a thrill to see Nola make it that far," Lowein said.

"We had good support at the club and there were people watching that don't normally follow bowls.

"We're only a small club and it was the first time in over ten years that two teams have played against each other in a final.

"The score wasn't an indication of the game, it was a good tussle."

Lowein, Farmer and Orchard will play the zone championships at Grafton in July.
