Alstonville double in final
ALSTONVILLE players will go in to the Far North Coast Water Polo grand final this weekend full of confidence.
Two Alstonville A-grade teams will battle it out in the Cup Final at 5.15pm at the Southern Cross University pool.
The Alstonville water polo team won both the junior and open men's competitions at the Coffs Harbour Plantation Hotel tournament last weekend.
The junior and open team comprised the same players, navigating the open competition without loss.
They won 10-3 win against Armidale, downed Mullumbimby 7-1 and then beat host club Coffs Harbour 6-2 with Tom Fleming scoring three goals in that game.
Alstonville fielded two junior sides and coach Mal Lewis was the only adult added to the side that backed up in men's competition.
"The young guys, all except one are under 16 and put in a great effort to play three men's games as well as their junior matches" Lewis said.
"Nick Stanek is a goal-scoring machine, Liam Hair is a great defender so is Jonathan Cusack and Felix Margraf pulled off some amazing saves in goals."
The Mullumbimby men's team have played together for 24 years but acknowledged the advantage of youth.
"Alstonville are always such strong swimmers, where our age is 52 and we haven't got enough juniors," player-coach Tony Margan said. Sam Dwyer, Mark Edwards and Peter Kirkland played well for Mullumbimby.
The Alstonville junior B team notched some big wins and lost only the one game, going down 6-1 against the tournament winners.
Josh Galbraith, Isaac Sheehan and Henry Danaher played well for the Alstonville B team.
Semi-finals at the SCU pool start at noon on Saturday.
