Alstonville actor Nicholas walks the Cannes red carpet

ALSTONVILLE actor Nicholas Hamilton has walked the red carpet with his co-stars for the premiere of his latest film, Captain Fantastic, at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

The prestigious international film festival opened on May 11 and will continue until May 22.

Captain Fantastic premiered Tuesday evening, alongside Pedro Almodóvar's "Julieta," Jeff Nichols' "Loving," Olivier Assayas' "Personal Shopper".

The film is about a father, played by Lord of the Rings actor Viggo Mortensen, who attempts to reintegrate into society with his children after living off the grid in the Pacific Northwest.

Nicholas was 14 when he was selected among five other actors - George Mackay, Annalise Basso, Samantha Isler, Shree Crooks and Charlie Shotwell - to star at Mortensen's children following a worldwide casting search.

Captain Fantastic will premiere in Australia at the Sydney Film Festival on June 16.

The film's director Matt Ross spoke highly of cast of young actors who play Mortensen brood of six.

"We needed children who were physically fit, who sounded like they knew and understood the complicated concepts they describe in the story, who could sing, play musical instruments, speak foreign languages, rock climb, fight, hunt. The list went on and on," he said.

"I wanted to find special kids, kids with a special spirit. And I wanted to try to capture that.

"And so narrowing it down was brutal. Every child has something special."

Nicholas's role in Captain Fantastic comes off the back of a key supporting role in the Australian feature film Strangerland, opposite Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving and Joseph Fiennes.
