Alleged sex attack on disabled woman

A TWEED Heads man has been granted bail after being charged with the aggravated sexual assault of a cognitively impaired woman in broad daylight on Monday.

The 20-year-old woman told Tweed police she was walking in Phillips Ln, Tweed Heads about 3pm on Monday when she was assaulted.

She had intended to visit a friend in the area but had found her friend wasn’t home.

Police will allege she was approached by a man who sexually assaulted her before she was able to break free.

A 23-year-old man was later arrested when a search warrant was executed at a local home.

Tweed Police Inspector Darren Steel yesterday confirmed police also seized several items from the home for forensic examination.

The man has been granted strict conditional bail and will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court on July 11.

Tweed police would like to speak to a woman with whom the victim spoke in Phillips Ln moments after the alleged assault, as investigations into the incident are continuing.

Insp Steel said at this stage no description of the woman had been offered.

Police are appealing for the woman, or anyone who knows her identity or whereabouts to contact them via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

All information will be treated in strict confidence and the identity of those helping will remain anonymous.
