Local actors taking on the world
FEW would think acting might bring a national or international career while living on the Northern Rivers, but there are some locals making a living from their acting skills here and overseas.
Lismore man Scott Pirlo moved back to the Northern Rivers a few years ago and has secured a steady stream of local and national acting work
"I grew up in Lismore and my family is here," Mr Pirlo said.
"I studied acting in Brisbane but I started getting jobs in and around the region and the work started rolling in and so I started chasing bigger opportunities and that started to happen."
Mr Pirlo started off in local commercials, had parts in Sea Patrol and the coming The Grandmothers feature film starring Naomi Watts - all from his base on the Northern Rivers.
"The world is a much smaller place now with technology, so you can do auditions online now."
Mr Pirlo is staying in Sydney while he works in various acting roles. However, he said he came home to the Northern Rivers at least once a month and often did auditions from Lismore.
He credited his success to Gilchrist Management and owner Charmaine Gilchrist's commitment to her clientele which enables many to live locally and work nationally and internationally.
Ms Gilchrist said her agency was unique being based in a regional area which brought in acting opportunities from Australia and overseas for local talent.
"It's good for people to know that I do this in a country town like Lismore because if there is a really good teenager or adult, like Scott, they may think they can't do it because they're not in a big city, but they can," Ms Gilchrist said.
