All invited to surf party
THE All Girls Surf Showdown turns 18 this year and everyone is invited to the party.
It will be a three-day celebration of surfing held over the Queen’s Birthday long-weekend at Lennox Head and Ballina’s north wall beaches.
Australia’s premier all-female event will see women from all over the country, and abroad, compete for thousands in cash and prizes.
As well as a spot on the illustrious list of past winners.
The open division of the Showdown has been a who’s who of women’s surfing in the past with three-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore, current world No 2 Sally Fitzgibbons, junior world champions Tyler Wright and Laura Enever, and 1993 world champion Pauline Menczer on the honour roll.
Boom Lennox surfer Wright took out the open and junior pro categories in 2009 and is expected to take her place in the field to defend her titles.
Event director Max Perrow said that the timing of the event was devised to maximise the possibility of a world-class field of lady surfers.
“There is nothing on in the pro circuit that weekend, so hopefully we will get some response from some of the big names,” Perrow said.
The top-15 women are restricted from entering the competition, meaning there will be no Gilmore or Fitzgibbons, but the rest are fair game.
Entries for the showdown are limited to 144 – potential competitors are urged to head to www.allgirlssurfshowdown.com to complete entry requirements.
