Alana's life-changing surgery finished after 10 hours

AFTER months of fundraising, thousands of kilometres of travel and a ten hour surgery, little Alana Reid has had the operation that will change her life.

Alana's parents endured a 10-hour wait yesterday as their little girl underwent a complicated surgery to correct her hearing in California and now they play the waiting game while her ear heals enough to tell just how well the surgery went.

"The surgery went very well," Alana's mum Emma Reid said.

"The doctors are positive it's going to be a good result."

Mrs Reid said the doctors working on Alana's surgery had been fantastic.

"The doctors were always in communication with us telling us how it was going and what they were going to do next," Mrs Reid said.

"They were very comforting."

The surgeons were surprised by Alana's case.

"They said it was the first time they had seen this type of formation of hearing bones before," Mrs Reid said.

"They were very excited by this and took photos."

Mrs Reid said Alana was sleeping peacefully back at the hotel with her My Little Ponies in hand following the surgery.

"In the recovery room she was quite upset and was trying to take the bandage off her head," she said.

"She is now back in the hotel room relaxed."

The family will see the doctors several times for follow up appointments over the next five weeks to see how Alana is healing and a hearing test will be done before she heads home.

"At the moment she has a rubber ear mould cup sewn around her ear to protect it," she said.

"There is also packing in the ear as well so we won't know if she can hear for a few weeks until it all comes off."
