Airport upgrade takes off

A $7 MILLION upgrade to the Whitsunday Coast Airport may have only just taken off; however, plans to further expand the facility are already in flight mode.

The airport's general manager business development Scott Waters was talking master plans and runway extensions yesterday as politicians and stakeholders celebrated the completion of the most recent upgrade.

Mr Waters said work had already begun on a master plan, which would outline further expansions involving transport, logistic and aviation training facilities.

He also said there were plans to add another 1000m to the existing 2073m runway to allow all international aircraft to land there. The recently completed upgrade has made it possible for international charter flights to use the airport.

The completion of the upgrade is a major step forward in the airport's plans to transform the facility into a key asset for future growth in the region.

That growth will be driven by expansions to Abbot Point and in the Bowen and Galilee basins.

Acting Queensland Premier Andrew Fraser said the latest upgrade would provide a welcome boost to the north.

Tourism Minister and Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt said the investment reflected the government's commitment to increasing the airport's airline capacity.
