Men charged over brawl at Byron Bay

TWO men were charged with affray after a violent fight on Jonson St, Byron Bay overnight.

Byron Bay police Acting Inspector Jack Keough said about 7.40pm police received reports of two men fighting opposite the Great Northern Hotel.

He said witnesses told police a 38-year-old man got a 35-year-old man in a choker hold after he alleged the younger man threatened him.

After the scuffle the pair separated before witnesses said the 38-year-old threw a bottle at the 35-year-old's head, causing minor scratches.

Act Insp Keough said patrons from the Great Northern Hotel ran across Jonson St and restrained the 38-year-old.

Emergency services arrived and both men were treated by paramedics before the 38-year-old was taken to Byron Bay hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

After police investigated the matter, both men, who were from Byron Bay, were charged with affray and granted conditional bail to appear in Byron Bay Local Court on October 23.
