Achieve peace at Northern Rivers’ Starlight Festival

FIRST there was Falls. Now a festival of a different kind is rocking the Northern Rivers. Or crystalling-it to be exact.

It's the Starlight Festival, at the A&I Hall in Bangalow, and it's jam-packed with psychic readings, essential oils, shamans, yoga, healing touch and natural beauty products from 40 stallholders.

Creator Rosie Richards said the festival offered a truly Byron Bay experience. "People can sample a wide range of experiences that aren't available in our daily lives," she said.

This year's brisk trade could be explained by the fact that people were looking for more ways to achieve peace as well as change, she believed.

"Each morning we are having a meditation for world peace and we are also developing a children's area with tie dying and fairy face painting."

If you don't want to get your aura photographed - mine is bright yellow and orange for creativity and optimism - or consult a psychic about your life direction - pass - there's talks and workshops from a range of practitioners.

This year's include "Southbath Healers" Oliver Maxted & Megan Selby, from the United Kingdom and Canadian Kari Barron sharing the ancient indigenous wisdom of the Mi'kmaq Elders of Canada and the Shipibo Shamans of Peru.

"They are ancient traditions that help you move closer to your heart," said Barron, who uses shamanic rhythm and sound, a sacred tobacco ceremony and other healing and meditative techniques.

She "smudges" me - a smoke ceremony - with a mix of tobacco, cedar, sage and sweetgrass that is supposed to be purifying and plays a sacred healing drum. And, yes, I feel strangely lighter.

To those who think it's all a bit navel gazing, the proof is in the popularity of the event.

Admission is $20 today and tomorrow. Tickets online or at the door  www.starlightfestival.com.au
