Abe rocks Chargers' challenge

TIGHT bowling and a whirlwind 61 not out by player of the match Abe Crawford have propelled the Northern Rivers Rock Twenty20 representative cricket team a step closer to an appearance at the SCG.

Northern Rivers (0-106) easily accounted for the Coffs Coast Chargers (105) in the first round of the Plan B Regional Bash at Oakes Oval, Lismore, yesterday.

The Rock reduced the Chargers to 7-44 before they recovered a little to reach 8-105.

Cudgen pacemen Caleb Ziebell (3-15) and James Julius (2-13) were difficult to get away.

After that pair had completed their spells, Josh Bartlett (29) and James Britnell (31 not out) managed to at least give the Coffs bowlers something to defend.

But it proved hopelessly inadequate, with hard-hitting Tintenbar-East Ballina all-rounder Crawford and Ballina Bears craftsman Justin Moore (43 not out) demolishing the target in just nine overs.

Crawford smashed three sixes and six fours in an innings his Far North Coast LJ Hooker League opposition is well aware he is capable of putting together.

The Rock will next play in two weeks against the winner of the game this weekend between the Northern Inland Bolters and the Macquarie Coast Stingers.

That second-round encounter will be at either Tamworth or Port Macquarie.

Ccoach Phil Melville said Casino Cavaliers batsman Sam Irvine would be unavailable.

"But Sam Adams (Ballina Bears) should be back and possibly Andrew Lindsay (Lennox Head), depending on injury," he said.

The Plan B Regional Bash final will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
