Attempted abduction of girl, 8

THE usually quiet Merton Mews estate at Clarenza, just south of Grafton, was in shock last night after the attempted abduction of an eight-year-old girl.

Police were last night interviewing two people in relation to the incident.

The little girl was playing with friends at the front of her house in Edward Ogilvie Drive about 2pm when a station wagon carrying a man and woman pulled up at the front of the house.

Police said the woman got out of the car and asked the girl to get something out of the boot. It was at this point the woman tried to grab the girl, who had the nous to turn and run.

The woman chased the girl up the driveway but failed to catch her.

The woman returned to the car and the pair fled the scene. The little girl’s father then jumped in the family car and went looking for the would-be abductors, without success.

A neighbour across the road and the girls’ friends were able to provide police with a detailed description of the car – including the registration number – and its occupants. Using the registration details, police made contact with the driver of the car.

He agreed to meet with police on the Gwydir Highway and was helping investigating officers with their inquiries.

Police were also taking statements from witnesses.
