A YOUNG life was tragically cut short when Jake Collins died as a result of serious head injuries sustained in a head-on crash at Bexhill.
Social media was flooded with tributes yesterday as news of the former Trinity Catholic College student's death spread across the Northern Rivers and beyond.
Richmond Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Mick Dempsey said the crash happened just after 6pm on Wednesday, when the 19-year-old from Clunes was driving a Toyota Corolla on Bangalow Rd.
"As he was approaching a sweeping left-hand bend, travelling towards Lismore, he has lost control in the wet," Insp Dempsey said.
"He crossed to the incorrect side of the road and collided head-on with a vehicle travelling in the other direction."
Insp Dempsey said the driver of the northbound Hyundai station wagon was a 54-year-old Mullumbimby man.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said several units responded to the incident at about 6.14pm.
Mr Collins was taken to Lismore Base Hospital and placed in intensive care in a critical condition with serious head injuries.
He passed away at about 3am yesterday.
The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition, where he was treated for spinal injuries.
This was the fifth fatality on Northern Rivers roads so far this year, following deaths on Ellangowan Rd at Yorklea, Ross Ln at Lennox Head, Main Arm Rd at Upper Main Arm, and the Summerland Way at Casino.
Insp Dempsey said motorists must drive to the conditions and be extra vigilant in wet weather.
Police are still investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
