OPINION: Origin prices shouldn't leave us broke

A HIGH pitched wail of anguish pierced their air, an unholy shriek born from the darkest pits of human despair.

It was a sound I knew all too well - the cry of an accountant being asked to part with his money.

My other half was hunched in front of the computer, his eyes welling up and bottom lip quivering.

After forcing a stiff drink into him and watching him rock back and forth in the foetal position for 20 minutes, he was able to make word sounds with his mouth.

"I wanted to buy us tickets to State of Origin as a surprise for you," he blubbered wetly. "But… but… they're so expensive!"

Normally, I would roll my eyes at my penny pinching partner whose idea of fun is running gleefully back and forth along the supermarket aisles, working out how many cents he'll save if he buys toilet paper in bulk. But on this occasion I couldn't agree with him more.

I can't even imagine how a family with a couple of kids could afford to go to the footy, and not be reduced to eating buttered noodles for the rest of the month.

What happened to rugby league being the working class game?

And it turns out Cameron Smith also agrees with me.

The Maroons' captain came out swinging at bean counters, claiming the team nearly fell off their chairs when they heard about the price of tickets.

I even find it hard to swallow the ticket price for a regular NRL matches, but maybe I've been around accountants too long.

The reality is a lot of people who would like to support their team aren't able to do so.

Is excluding them from buying tickets a good thing? Probably not. I beg of you, think of the accountants.
