Wellington and Newcastle suffer in nil-all draw

BOTH Wellington and Newcastle remain near the bottom of the ladder after playing out a spirited 0-all draw at McLean Park in Napier yesterday.

Phoenix playmaker Carlos Hernandez was a menace on a number of occasions, producing some lovely crosses, only to be denied by Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.

The Jets are yet to score a goal this season, but they were industrious in attack, particularly in the first half.

They produced 30 crosses to the home side's 15, and only the crossbar denied captain Ruben Zadkovich from scoring after 19 minutes from a free-kick.

Then teammate and defender Scott Neville had two shots on target, but was denied by opposing keeper Glen Moss and defender Leo Bertos.

It was Hernandez who stalled the visitors' momentum just minutes before half-time, though.

He almost had the 9020 fans cheering after finding Stein Huysegems at the far post, but Birighitti produced a great save on his goal line.

The Jets custodian then denied Phoenix captain Andrew Durante just after the break, once again off a good Hernandez ball played in.
