Three men arrested attempting to import drug precursors

THREE men have been arrested and five kilograms of border controlled precursors seized following a 14-month joint investigation.

The three men, aged 29, 34 and 43, were arrested at the weekend after allegedly attempting to import approximately five kilograms of pseudoephedrine from Iran, via the international freight and mail systems concealed in shipments of loose tea.

On of the men is also alleged to have received an air cargo consignment of tea which contained approximately 20kg of pseudoephedrine in August last year.

The arrests are the result of a 14-month NSW Police investigation, in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, into the supply of pseudoephedrine in south-western Sydney.

Australian Federal Police Manager of Crime Operations Commander Jennifer Hurst said the investigation was a great demonstration of the coordination between the three agencies over an extended period.

"The arrests should serve as a timely reminder to those considering importing drugs," she said.

"Agencies are working together stronger than ever to ensure that drugs do not make it to the streets and that those responsible for the importation of drugs are bought to justice."

The three men were refused bail on Sunday after appearing briefly in the Parramatta Local Court. They will appear again in court at a future date.
