South Africa needs record run chase to beat India

SOUTH Africa needed to produce a world-record run chase if they were to beat India on the final day of the first Test in Johannesburg overnight.

The hosts resumed on 2-138 in pursuit of the 458 needed for victory in the first game of the two-Test series.

Opener Alviro Petersen was unbeaten 76 alongside Faf du Plessis (10).

South Africa's target was 40 runs more than the record run chase, achieved by West Indies in a 2003 victory over Australia.

India has never lost at the Wanderers.
