Schoolies fight over religion ends in a coma

TWO NSW schoolies have been charged after an argument over religion ended with a Gold Coast schoolie being put into an induced coma in hospital.

Southport Magistrates Court heard the 18-year-old victim was king-hit twice and then spat on during the alleged assault in Surfers Paradise.

Maddy Khal, 18, was granted bail yesterday morning after appearing in court charged with two counts of common assault. Daniel El-Nacher, 17, charged with grievous bodily harm, was yet to face court.

Sky News reported the victim was conscious when police arrived at the scene but did not want to press charges.

Police went ahead, however, after he reported to a Queensland Ambulance Service tent at the Schoolies hub before being taken to hospital.

He had regained consciousness and was in a stable condition yesterday afternoon.
