Police searching for missing driver of torched car

POLICE yesterday confirmed they were investigating the disappearance of a man who had been driving a car found torched in an overgrown gravel pit at Barkers Vale 10 days ago.

Initially local police were reluctant to reveal details of the investigation of the burnt-out vehicle, and whether it was being treated as a homicide.

However, yesterday police from Sydney said concerns were held for the driver's welfare.

The confirmation follows a search of the area by SES volunteers on Monday.

The SES combed bushland and gullies on a cattle property near where the burnt-out Land-Rover was found, 500 metres south of the Barkers Vale Public School.

A low-flying helicopter joined in the ground search the previous week, but failed to find any trace of the man.
