POLICE are urging witnesses of a fiery fatal crash in Victoria to come forward.

Two males aged 18 and 16 died after the car they were in veered off the Princes Freeway, crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The crash occurred at Altona, in south-west Melbourne, just before 11pm on Tuesday.

Police said the driver, from the Melbourne suburb of Yarraville, had obtained his driver's licence about a week ago.

It has been reported the 16-year-old passenger was on the phone to a friend getting directions at the moment of impact.
